NEW EVENT BRINGS THE ISLAND COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Home Farm Equestrian Club hosting the very first Jersey Horse of the Year Show (JHOYS).  The event is being held in October and will bring together the whole equestrian community with five days of competing across four disciplines.

Equestrians will have several opportunities to qualify for the Championship Show at various events throughout the year run by local equestrian groups. The Jersey Horse of the Year show takes place on 8-9 October and 14-16 October and will have over 50 classes and approximately 500 competitors across the event. There will be something for every member of the family to enjoy including a shopping village and food stalls.

Karen Barette, Chairman of Home Farm Equestrian said: ‘I am delighted we are hosting the JHOYS. If anyone has been fortunate enough to attend the HOYS in England they will know how magical the event is and it’s so exciting to be part of bringing the magic to Jersey.  I am so thankful to the various local equestrian groups who are supporting this event, it’s lovely to all work together to be part of creating this special event.‘

There are various opportunities for local business to get involved in JHOYS, from trade stands in the shopping village to sponsorship opportunities. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to get involved with one of the largest sports in the Island that is helping to produce some new and talented members of the local community. It is also a brilliant chance to enjoy local riding, meet new people passionate about the sport and enjoy all the benefits that the JHOYS has to offer. Sponsorship options range from £200 to £4,000 with bespoke options available.  For more information about sponsorship please email sponsor@jhoys.co.uk

Dionne Gorst, Qualified Competitor JHOYS 2022 said: ‘We were so pleased to qualify to compete at Jersey Horse of the Year Show. This is such a great new venture for Jersey and we as a family are looking forward to competing. We hope it becomes a firm family event in the Jersey calendar.

Andrew Le Gallais MBE, Cowley Dairy Farm – Sponsor JHOYS 2022 said: ‘Karen and Trevor passionately believe in and actively contribute to our Island’s countryside, be it in terms of supporting local food production, upholding our unique heritage, as well as the peace of mind it provides to so many appreciative Islanders. The Jersey Horse of the Year Show is the culmination of all these ideals which are recognised by so many, and I know they are going to work tirelessly to make this event a true celebration of what makes our Island so unique.’

So far over 240 competitors qualified for the first JHOYS event in October with many more qualifying opportunities still to come!

Jersey Horse of the Year Show dates:

October 8 – Working Hunter

Riders are required to jump a course of rustic fences. In horse ranks, a ride judge will then officiate the performance. Conformation is also assessed before the marks for each section are added together to produce the final line-up.

There are 100 marks to win. The jumping section is worth 60% of the marks; 40 marks for the jumping round and 20 marks for style and presence. The ride and conformation are worth 20 marks each.

October 9th -Showjumping

Showjumping requires athleticism, control and accuracy from both horse and rider over a set course of knockable fences which include verticals, spreads, double and/or triple combinations, with a variety of turns and changes of direction.

The aim is to jump cleanly over the set course without knocking down the fences, refusing, or running out. For many classes, this must be achieved within an allotted time to go through to the next round, known as the ‘jump-off’. The combination with the fastest time and the least amount of faults wins.

October 14th – Dressage

At its most basic level, dressage is about knowing how to control the horse through the different paces from halt to walk, trot and canter and how to steer the any given direction.

At the highest level, it’s about using the power, elegance and impeccable training of the horse to execute complex movements as required by the test or choreographed to music.

Our riders will compete from an Introductory level up to Advanced Medium where movements and tests become more complicated as they rise through the levels.

October 15th – In Hand Showing

Showing horses is an activity that any horse, pony and individual can get involved in. Some classes require the horse or pony to be ridden, while others require the horse or pony to be led (in-hand).

There are classes for all types and ages of horses and ponies including many breed-specific classes, some of which are linked to the relevant breed and showing societies.

In hand, the horses and ponies are assessed to ensure that they are true to type, according to the breed standard and fit for purpose with movement, conformation and overall appearance is all taken into account.

October 16th Ridden Showing

In ridden classes the judge will again assess the suitability of the animal to carry out its proposed duties, for example, a hunter should be sufficiently sound, mannerly and well balanced to follow hounds across the country for many hours at a time, whereas a riding pony should have impeccable manners, movement and conformation to safely enable a child to participate in a range of activities.
