Review on fishing industry of UK-EU agreement

A REVIEW to understand the effects on Jersey’s fishing industry and marine resources of the post-Brexit UK-EU Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TECA), are ongoing.

Last month States Members voted to approve, in principle, the Island’s participation in the deal, which has a 90-day cooling-off period. They have until 31 March 2021 to decide whether the TECA is in Jersey’s best interests or whether any involvement should be terminated.

The Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel is focusing on six different objectives including the ramifications of cancelling The Granville Bay Agreement, which set out shared fishing rights in the Island’s seas, notably the three to six-mile limit around the Minquiers and the Ecréhous, the Paternosters and Les Dirouilles.

The Panel will be examining how Jersey’s fishermen will be affected by the changing rules, the licensing of EU fishing boats in the Island’s waters, and what subsidies are being provided by the French government to its fishing industry.

In the meantime, the Island’s Brexit Review Panel will also be considering the trading implications of the TECA for Jersey-EU trade in goods.
