Jersey’s rich heritage of growing apples and making cider is being celebrated at the Jersey Museum where a patchwork quilt is on display as part of the ‘Bouan Appétit’ exhibition.
Its accompaniment, The Jersey Cider Apple Quilt Book, tells the story of how more than 300 people, aged from between three and 89, united to create the quilt which embodies craft, creativity, kindness and community.
Jersey Heritage Volunteer Julia Coutanche said the project, which was launched in 2019, was affected by the Covid lockdown but while this delayed its completion, it was also enriched by the enforced isolation.
‘The 413 blocks were hand-sewn and machine-stitched together by a small team of skilled, patient, tenacious and kind volunteers,’ she said.
A version of the list of the squares will soon be added alongside the nine-and-a-half feet square quilt which will help visitors identify and appreciate it even more.
‘It is a fabulous exhibition and the quilt looks amazing,’ said Julia.
The Jersey Cider Apple Quilt Book can be purchased for £15 from retail outlets at Jersey Heritage sites.
