THE ISLAND’S HEDGEHOGS NEED YOU!

The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group is looking for one or two volunteers to take over the everyday running of their rescue centre in Waterworks Valley.

The current care manager, Dru Burdon, who has been responsible for the hedgehogs’ welfare for 32 years, is retiring.

A posting on the group’s website states that full time cover is required at busy times of the year whereas quieter times probably require morning cover only.

‘This is why we think that two people may prefer to share the responsibility. Hours would be flexible by arrangement.’

The successful candidates will be responsible for all the hedgehogs being cared for at the centre from their admission to their release. Also, they will be required to organise and supervise the group’s volunteer care team and deal with members of the public.

Full training will be given by the current care manager until the new volunteers feel confident providing treatments for the hedgehogs including identifying and treating parasites and injecting medication as well as hand rearing abandoned hoglets.

‘You will encounter some badly injured and very sick hedgehogs which are taken straight to New Era vets for emergency treatment or to be put to sleep.’

The new care managers will be expected to attend a one-day basic hedgehog first aid course at Vale Wildlife Hospital in Tewkesbury.

For more information contact Dru on 01534 734340 or email her on jerseyhedgehogs@hotmail.co.uk.
